What is the Nakba?
The Nakba is a term used in Palestinian historical narrative to refer to the events of 1948, which resulted in the displacement of large numbers of Palestinians from their towns and villages, as well as significant demographic and geographic changes in the region.
Various historical estimates indicate that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians left or were compelled to leave their places of residence during that period, leading to the formation of refugee communities in different areas.
The Nakba is considered an important historical milestone in Palestinian collective memory and is commemorated annually on May 15 as a day of historical remembrance.
The term represents one aspect of the historical narrative associated with the events of 1948, which continue to be the subject of academic and political study and discussion in the international context.
